Zambia's first lithium-ion battery trainees came to see how we work
On 9 September we hosted the students and instructors of the Lithium-Ion Battery Technology, Maintenance and Circularity Skills Award, the first programme of its kind in Zambia, for a company visit to our workshop in Lusaka.
Two groups came through during the day: the students of the inaugural cohort, their instructors, and representatives from TEVETA, the GIZ Switch to Circular Economy programme, PEM from Germany and the University of Zambia. The visit is part of the Skills Award, a new national curriculum for lithium-ion battery technicians that Astanah helped validate in July.

We walked them through the batteries we hold today and the ones we have built since Astanah started in 2019: how we tested and assembled packs in the early years with the tools we had, and how the business and its capacity have grown, step by step, since then. Our visitors were pleased with what they saw, and a little surprised at how long we have been at it.
To the students we said the thing we believe most: skills like ours are built by starting. Take the first job, rebuild the first pack, and keep going. Astanah will be there to support them on that journey.
It was a pleasure to have them here and to share what we have learned about the battery refurbishment industry in Zambia, the work, the wins and the challenges. Our thanks to TEVETA, GIZ, PEM and UNZA for working with us on this. We look forward to doing more together.
